A moulded silicone horse is not the specification anyone shops on, and it is the reason this camera comes first. Every camera in this guide is going to be dropped; the Careenoah is the one that arrives already wrapped in a thick, grippy cover, so a tumble off a picnic table is more likely to be a scuff than a repair. It also gives small hands something to hold on to, which matters more than any menu when the photographer is four.
Print density is the detail we did not expect to care about. Thermal printing runs dark, and this one lets you set density from 0 to 4, so a print that is turning a face into a grey smear can be lightened, and a dim indoor shot can be pushed until it reads. Around that sit 13 frames, 13 cartoon effects and five filters — enough variety to keep a child finding new things, not so much that it buries the shutter button.
The rest is quietly right. The 2.4-inch IPS screen is easy to frame on, stills land at 8MP and video at 1080p, and both are stored on the card in color so the good ones can be printed properly later. Three paper rolls, a memory card, a neck strap and a charging cable are in the box, and the warranty runs a full year where several picks here offer six months.
What it is not: a camera for a nine-year-old who wants to look like everyone else. The horse styling and the 3-to-8 framing make that plain, and an older child will notice. As a first camera for a four- to six-year-old, we have not found a better balance in this group.
Pros
- Moulded silicone cover takes the knocks
- Five print-density levels fix dark prints
- Simple enough for a four-year-old
- Three rolls and a one-year warranty included
Cons
- Stills are 8MP, behind several picks here
The one we hand to a family buying their first kids' camera: a moulded silicone cover, five print densities, and a screen a four-year-old can frame with.
