Plenty of boxes in this guide are just that: a box. You supply the bracket that holds the flash, and the first session turns into a second order. The Lapgood kit arrives complete — S-type bracket, Bowens receiver, and honeycomb grid in the same carton — so a bare speedlight goes from hot shoe to stand without a shopping trip in between.
The two-part mounting is what we appreciate most. The Bowens section detaches so the same box takes a round-head flash or a square-head one without an adapter hunt, and the box opens and closes in a single step. On a stand it sits settled; hand-held by the bracket, it is steady enough for a few frames before your wrist votes for a stand.
Twenty-four inches is the size that earns its keep for headshots and half-length portraits — wide enough to wrap light around a face, small enough to work in a living room with the sofa pushed back. The front diffuser goes on and comes off without a fight, and the reflective interior keeps the light even across a face rather than pooling in the middle.
The grid is the extra we ended up using more than expected. With it fitted, spill onto the wall behind a subject drops away, which is the difference between a portrait that looks lit and one that looks flashed. It is the kind of kit that teaches you what your next box should be.
Pros
- Bracket, Bowens receiver, and grid included
- Detachable Bowens section fits round or square heads
- Single-step open and close
- 24-inch face suits headshots and half-length portraits
Cons
- 2.64 lbs is a two-handed hold off a stand
The one we hand most speedlight owners: bracket, Bowens receiver, and grid in a single box, so a bare flash becomes a soft off-camera light without a second order.
