Four cameras, an eight-channel recorder, and a 2TB drive already fitted: that is the shape most houses need, and it is the kit we tell people to look at first. The cameras record at 5MP rather than 4K, which sounds like a step down until you think about retention — the same 2TB holds considerably more days of 5MP footage than of 4K, and at 25 frames per second the motion here is smoother than the 20 fps the 4K Reolink manages.
What we appreciate most is the headroom. Eight channels for four cameras means a side gate or a garage bay can be added later without replacing the recorder, and each camera runs on a single Ethernet cable that carries power and video together. The 18 infrared LEDs reach about 100 feet, and the detection is designed to sort people, animals, and vehicles from shadows rather than alerting on everything that moves.
Longevity is the thing we keep an eye on with any kit at this price. Cameras that stop working are the failure that turns up most across these systems, and Reolink's two-year warranty is what makes that survivable — register the system when it arrives rather than hunting for the receipt in year two.
The app and the desktop client cost nothing to use, with live view, playback, and alerts included and no subscription attached. Reolink reckons the 2TB drive gives you about ten days before it starts overwriting, which is a comfortable margin for a four-camera house.
Pros
- 5MP keeps the 2TB drive useful far longer than the 4K kits
- Eight channels for four cameras leaves room to expand
- One cable per camera carries power and video
- Free app and desktop client with no subscription
Cons
- 59 ft cables in the box limit long runs
- Motion alerts need tuning to stop false triggers
For most houses this is the kit we point to: 5MP footage that makes the included 2TB go further than the 4K systems here, on a recorder with room for four more cameras.
