A phone cage only earns its keep when it disappears into the shot and lets you work. The SmallRig 4121 kit does that by starting with a solid universal cage, then adding two silicone-covered handles that give you a proper two-handed grip. We liked that the handles can be re-aimed and height-adjusted with the built-in Allen wrench, so the rig can sit vertically or horizontally without hunting for tools. The cage accepts phones from 57 to 90 mm wide with a case on, which covers most current flagships.
The mounting story is the reason to choose this kit over a bare cage. Each aluminum handle carries a cold shoe on top, and the cage adds the usual 1/4-inch threads for arms, monitors, or a tripod. We found the layout sensible: a mic on one side, a light on the other, and the phone still sits centrally enough to balance. The 600 g weight is substantial, but that is the trade for a rig that feels planted in your hands rather than skittering around.
It is not the smallest option here, and the dual handles take up bag space. If you mostly shoot on a tripod, the P20 or a bare cage makes more sense. But for handheld interviews, run-and-gun, and any setup where you want a microphone and light off the phone's own frame, the SmallRig 4121 is the most complete default in this group. We also appreciate the two-year warranty, which is a practical comfort for a rig that will get knocked around.
Pros
- Wide 57–90 mm case-friendly clamp
- Dual adjustable handles with cold shoes
- Built-in Allen wrench for adjustments
- Two-year warranty
Cons
- 600 g kit is bulky for travel
- Large folded footprint for a phone rig
For most filmmakers, this is the two-handle cage we reach for first: it grips a wide range of cased phones and gives every accessory a secure home.
