The pedal is the reason to look at this one. Press it with your foot and the ball swivel in the base releases; step off and the whole monopod locks at whatever angle you left it, so you can change the angle of a pan without taking a hand off the grip. The rest of the package is carbon: 180 cm at full extension, 1.27 kg on the scale, and rated for 17.6 lb of camera and lens.
We keep reaching for it because that is the balance most shooters actually need — stiff enough for a long lens, light enough that it stays clipped to the bag instead of sitting in the car. The top plate is a proper quick release: press the sleeve, the plate pops out, push it back and it locks, with 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch threads so a camera, gimbal, or mic bar goes straight on. The base also unscrews into a tabletop mini tripod, which is more useful than it sounds when you want a low angle on a desk or against a wall.
It ships as a leg, so a head is a separate purchase — worth doing the arithmetic against the kits that arrive with one attached. The pedal is also happiest on something flat, and on a slope you will shuffle around looking for a footing. Both are small things against what it gets right, which is being the support we never think twice about carrying.
Pros
- Foot pedal locks the base angle hands-free
- 17.6 lb payload at 1.27 kg of carbon
- Quick-release plate with 1/4 and 3/8 screws
- Base doubles as a tabletop mini tripod
Cons
- Packs to 27 inches, longer than the compact picks
The monopod we recommend to anyone who shoots both stills and video, because it carries a real lens without weighing down the bag.
